THE
MENDOZA FAMILY BIOGRAPHIES
Monica's is merely one of a family-run enterprise which includes : Monica's
Restaurant, Monica's Salumeria, and Monica's Pizzeria. Each member of the
Mendoza family performs a specific role to ensure that their culinary concept
continues to delight residents and visitors to the North End.
Maria Mendoza -
Maria Mendoza
developed her customer relation skills in the retail industry where she became
adept at convincing customers to be courageous by trying new things. From
her experience she brings the skills of relating to customers and getting
them to experiment. Maria is the perfect choice to assist Mother Monica at
the Salumeria. Together, they insist happy customers return home with imported
cheeses, handmade pasta, and Italian specialties.
George Mendoza - Executive Chef
George was always interested in food and had been in the industry for 17 years
prior to opening Monica's Restaurant. He held positions with the Marriott
Corporation, Maison Robert, and Davide's. His mother's Northern Italian/Argentinean
roots and his own recollection of delicious family meals have influenced much
of his cooking. Most of George's creative dishes pay homage to his mother's
skill in the kitchen.
After he felt he knew his mother's techniques and recipes as well as she,
and with the support of his family, he opened the original Monica's Restaurant
in 1995 located in a small storefront on Prince Street in the Boston's North
End. In the Spring of 1999, he relocated the restaurant to larger quarters
on Richmond Street and opened Monica's Pizzeria in the former space. Shortly
thereafter, he opened the Salumeria a few streets down. For the past five
years, all of the Monica establishments have been the places to go for superior
food -- whether it be a fully prepared meal, specialty items to cook with
at home or for a great piece of pizza.
Patrick Mendoza - The Buyer/The Artist
Patrick's role in the Mendoza food empire is helping George run Monica's Restaurant.
While George is busy creating new and exciting menus, Patrick can be seen
at the local markets, selecting the freshest and finest produce. He also selects
the imported and domestic food products fort the Salumeria. It is Patrick
who developed the award-winning pizza sauce that enables Monica's Pizzeria
to stand out from the rest in an area filled with "pizza joints".
Patrick, along with brother Juan is one of the two artists in the family.
Juan Mendoza - The Artist
By day, Juan can be seen running the front of the house at Monica's Pizzeria.
By night, he is often found with his sketch book and pencils. Juan is credited
with designing Monica's endearing logo, a caricature of a plump nun holding
plates brimming with pasta. His artwork, along with brother Patrick's, adorns
the walls at Monica's Restaurant.
Frankie Mendoza - Head "Pizza Guy"
Frankie is the youngest in the Mendoza family. Having worked in a pizzeria
for most of his life, he was the natural choice to be the "Head Pizza
Guy" his affectionate family title. In addition to making great pizza
dough, he is responsible for the ever-changing menu of prepared items for
the Salumeria. He is includes freshly-grilled meats, stuffed pastas, frittatas,
roasted vegetables, and much much more.
