The Piccolo Nido is an Italian restaurant standing at the
corner of North and Lewis Street in the North End neighborhood of Boston. Piccolo Nido means “little nest” in Italian,
appropriately so named, the friendly and cozy atmosphere explains the choice of
the name. When you go there, Pino Irano
(the owner) welcomes you with open arms; he and his staff tend to your every
culinary need with the traditional Italian hospitality.
The Piccolo Nido’s cuisine is a mix of various regional
cooking traditions of Italy. The man
behind all this culinary delight is Vincenzo Loffredo, the Chef. Chef Vincenzo
has perfected the art of cooking his ever so popular and succulent Vittello
Valdostana. This favorite entrée is
made of escalope of veal topped with prosciutto (Italian cured ham) and fontina
cheese sautéed in a demi glace sauce. Another house specialty must is the Risotti. My favorite entrée was the Trota Alla Mugnaia. This fresh trout dish is sautéed in a light
white wine sauce. If you love fish try it.
One cannot go to the Piccolo Nido without trying their
famed Calamari Alla Griglia appetizer, as decreed by popular demand. The dish is made of grilled squid, accented
with herbs and fresh lemon served over a bed of mixed greens.
Even though most Piccolo Nido’s patrons tend to be
business professionals, the ambiance at this best kept secret is sunny, laid
back, and casual. The furniture
assortment of Piccolo Nido is Italian. Pino purposefully intended to create a worm and cozy place were fine
Italian cuisine could be experienced, in the heart of Boston.
Piccolo Nido is open from 4.00 PM to 10.00 PM from Monday
to Thursday, and from 4:00PM to 11:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays.
As any North End visitor learns the hard way, parking
is at a premium – a euphemism for difficult. The Piccolo Nido does not provide parking space, you need to leave your
car at the many ubiquitous parking lots or sightsee the environs while seeking
a free parking spot by the curbside.
