Funk meets Weather Report meets Hard Bop meets
The Crusaders from a new outfit as tight as the proverbial duck's posterior.
Drummer Bellotti and bassist D'Agostini met at Berklee and hatched the
idea of a CD with a 'famous' guest. And in these kind of circles, you don't
come much more famous than Mike Stern who adds his inimitable touch to
three tracks here.
This is a fine band who've obviously played together
for some time. The melange of influences mentioned above meld together
extremely well and all of the musicians are first rate. Saxophonist Vint
adds the hard-bop touches whilst bassist D'Agostini and drummer Bellotti
propell the band along with a rock solid funky rhythm.
Whilst it's great to make your first CD with
a player like Mike Stern on board, and it sure helps to sell CDs, Spajazzy
have a quality, level of musicianship and inate feel which means they should
have a great future. Whilst Stern plays with his usual fine sense of hard-edge
conciseness, this CD could have stood up without him and that's maybe a
true test of what is a fine CD.Rating:
